Default Low oil pressure

The low oil pressure light in my daughter's 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro (46K miles) came on yesterday. The light was intermittent (on & off) so she drove it home where it is now in her garage. Of course, the 4 hear warranty expired last June.

Any ideas what might cause this problem? Is it a common problem? What is the fix?

First thing to check is the oil level. If it is OK, it could either be the oil pressure sender, or a failing oil pump. Unusual for the pump to fail on a 3.0.

If the oil is OK, have it flatbedded to a garage that works with VW or Audis. If you feel lucky, you can carefully drive it to a garage. If the oil pressure light starts flashing, shut the car down immediately and have it towed.

The first thing I checked was the oil level... it is up to the top of the dipstick. Today, I replaced the oil pressure switch. We drove the car for about 20 minutes with no light at all. We thought we found it. Then the light came back on again but is very intermittent, probably off more than it is on. I'm really puzzled.

I really think we can drive it to a dealer, but I'm not ready to trust it to an extended trip. Is this engine subject to sludge problems?

well if it is more off then on then you might be able to make it to your dealer. IS the dealer close by or is it like a 25 mile trip? all engines have sludge problems

Be unusual to sludge at so low a mileage, but it could happen. I wouldn't fool around as there is no quicker way to trash an engine than low oil pressure.

Thinking about this problem in bed last night, the thought occurred to me that possibly the oil filter is clogged and not allowing full flow/pressure to reach the pressure switch (and obviously the rest of the engine). Does anyone know whether the pressure switch is upstream or downstream of the filter from the oil pump? A new filter (with oil change) would certainly be a simple solution.
