Metal lid shaking on glass sound (Dash Noise)
Hello everyone,
Sorry that my first post is one of these frustrating 'what is wrong with my Audi?' questions. This looks like a great community of enthusiasts and I look forward to participating here.
I used the search function first and it doesn't sound like this sound issue is one that came up in my dash noises search.
here it is:
2004 A4, tip, convertible - I have this noise coming from behind the dash, literally behind the steering wheel that sounds like a thin metal lid shaking on glass. The noise is louder on rougher roads and very loud at highway speeds, almost to the point of requiring the stereo to be up quite loud to avoid hearing it. Also, the longer I'm drivingone a particular occasion the worse the sound gets. The dealer here in the Denver area is clueless and has no idea what it could be, and they're a little annoyed that I'm upset that they can't figure it out.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Aaron

Take off the panel under the steering wheel (there should be three 8mm bolts, one is by the fuse panel) and you will see two metal braces there to support your knees in a crash. Test drive the car with the panel off and when you hear the noise hold onto the metal braces and see if the noise goes away, you can also find it if you bang on the dash with the panel off. Thats a common problem on B6 body A4's.
