I thought the only way of closing the windows when you are outside the car is by putting the key in the key hole and turn it and hold until sunroof/windows close. ( I have a 2002 1.8T)

Is there a way to do this from the remote too????

Ok here's the deal...

You must recode the control module for window control. Using this tech write-up you can achieve this. After you recode the control module, you can roll up the windows by holding down the lock button, or roll them down by holding down the unlock button. The car does not need to be started to use this feature.

They should have come stock around 99 or so. Just do a search on ebay for "audi a4 uncut". Should bring you up some uncut key fobs. There will be some that have three buttons on them, they are for avants not sedan. Your dealer should be able to cut your key for you, mine only charges 5 bucks. Don't forget to program the remote when you are done to work with your car. I'm not going to tell you how to do that though, do a search on this website (i've only explained it 500 times).
