OBD PO172B code
Hello boys and girls,
Sorry, I'm a newbie here, but have been lurking here for, well 3 years now. Now I have a problem and hoping to get some suggestions.
I have a PO172B code and check engine light on my 2001 A4 Turbo.
I took it to a local garage and they checked hoses and other things to try to diagnose it. They could not find the cause and told me that the next step that Audi recommends is to take it to the dealership (ouch!) to do the turbo pressure test (they said, they don't have the eqp.).
Is there anything I can do before I go to the "dragon's lair", to have my blood sucked out?
(Sorry, I have nothinng against dealerships, just too expensive, and I try to avoid them if I can.)
Thanks,
Dave

I can't find that code. OBD codes are numbers and don't have letters in them.
Take the car to autozone and have them pull the codes and post them back here. There is no reason to take your car back to the dealer. Find an independent mechanic who specializes in VW/Audi . Your wallet will thank you.

David,
Thanks for your reply. The code was read by an independent mechanic. Their reader showed PO172B, but the letter is specific to their reader. The actual OBD code is PO172, and the description was as I remember: "System too reach".
They suggested it was a vacuum leak. They tried to diagnose the problem (cost me ~$80), but could not find a cause. They checked hoses, etc., and said next step that Audi recommends was Turbo system pressure test. I'm afraid if I take to another mechanic, they are going to "try to diagnose", for anoyjet $80.
So I guess my question is, has anyone had the above code with the above description and if so what was the cause, or what else can it be apart from the hoses?
Thanks,
David

I've had the PO171 but not the PO172. Here is the info on your code:

I would definitely check for a boost leak. There are DIY instructions around, search "tennis" as in tennis ball method. Here are a couple to give you a start:

Its sounds like maybe bad air/fuel inputs, maybe check/clean the MAF sensor in your air intake, look for loose hoses, leaks, etc, clean the TB, clear the codes by removing the neg battery cable and see if they come back.
Well having a boost leak would defanitly cause in a reading saying it was too ritch. so ya, there is a simple way to pressure test your system on here using a tennis ball and a compressor. Good luck!
