A good synthetic Oil, depending on conditions, paired with a good filter can last 15k. If you're changing oil every 3k you're wasting your time and money.

true but you gotta also look at the way you drive, i drive the s!it out of my car usually hitting 100mph plus on the country road, this causes conventional oil to break down very fast so for me 2500-3000 is good, even with synthetic oil

Thats why I said depending on conditions. For long trips and when proper procedures are used to heat the oil up to temp then it can last a long time. Good for you if you drive the crap out of youre car. You can still do that and have a nice long OCI as long as you warm the oil up to the proper temp. The added fuel during engine warm up leads to oil breakdown.

If you just got your audi I would stick with the 3k oil change for the first 2-3. Just to get ride of the sludge the previous owner caused by using cheap/normal oil.

That method won't do a whole lot. Engine oil is for lubrication, not cleaning. If you want to clean your engine out try AutoRX. I've used it and it seems to have helped a bit. The oil filters from my clean and rinse phases were nasty.

I try to change my 98.5 around 3-4k too. Its more of a "high mileage" thing - just being safe
