Oil Leak, seal at rear of engine
 

Just dropped my car off at the dealer for a noisy rear wheel bearing (2001 A4 Quatro, 1.8T).

Theclerk checking the car inlooked under the hood and saw some oil at the rear of the engine. He said it is probably a leaky rear seal in the vicinity of the cam shafts? He said they need to take the upper part of the engine off to replace them, for around $490!

Obviously I told him to let the mechanic diagnose it before they did anything. Anyone else seen this?

their mechanic will do as they are told not what they see $$$$$$ you should have taken it else where for a diagnosis

Yes its very common on our cars to have a leaky seal around the cam tensioner..you can diy and save yourself that $500..just search about the leak and you will find how to do it..havent done it myself..so dont know how hard it is.

These things happen, seals go on everycar, cams and heads and the hole 9 dont worry, if its only 500 to fix and you cant do yourself id say go for it.

Just did it two weeks ago. Head to ecs tuning and get a new valve cover gasket and a cam tensioner gasket. Cost is like $40 and you need a cam tool $25 (i have one ill send you for $20 shipped). It is a simple job, took me about 3hours to do for the first time and that was because i had crappy directions. With good ones i could of had it done in just under 2 hours taking your time. My brother waited on his and he had oil covering his tranny and other places. Do it now and save yourself the time and effort of a harder clean up job.

Thanks a lot for the help everyone. I am fairly handy around the tools but am a little hesitant about this.

I called a local Denver shop (recommended on this site) and he quoted me around $200, which was $40 for parts and an hour and a half or so at$100/hour. I'll tell the dealer to hold off and take it here.I probably should have done this in the first place.
