power steering question
 

Does anyone have any experience with the power steering systems of a 1998 a4. I bought my car about a week ago and the seller told me that there was a small leak with the power steering fluid...he told me he had it checked and the mechanic told him he could wait because it didnt seem major, just fill it with fluid every once in awhile when it gets a little low. well i was getting a really good deal, so i figured whatever it was...it would not be a huge ordeal, i bought the car. i have not driven the car much..like twice since i bought it...but i noticed that there is a strong leak when the car is on. if it is off, nothing really leaks...but when the engine is on...the thing is spitting power steering fluid like a bitch. I have yet to have the time to jack the car up and get underneath to check it out..but does anyone have any opinions. i'm hoping its either a seal, hose, or something like that...and not the pump or anything major. im thinking to myself...i dont think it is bad because the pump is definetely pumping....something just isnt holding it in. if anyone has had problems with the power steering system, i'm open for ideas.


again, i have not gotten under the car yet, so i know it's immpossible to judge the problem before that but im just looking for ideas.

well typically the problem stems from the return lines running up to the fluid tank. Check the connections and hose clamps for leaks.

just changed my return line, had a split in it. i drove my car 60 miles home with no fluid what so ever and thankfully it was still good. also made a mess of the undercarraige and wheel well

was it expensive...and how hard was it to change? the engine isnt exactly spread out
