problem
Last summer 2005, I had the same problem. It was caused by dirt on a wheel sensor.
I tapped each brake caliper with a one pound hammer. This link may help you determine
which sensor is at fault:

Not so fast there guys.... Get a VAG and see if you can communicate with the ABS computer, if not then your ABS computer needs a rebuild ($250), if so try cleaning your ABS sensors... I just found out that the tone ring on my driver rear (which was causing my ABS to malfunction) had a chip out of it due to corrosion, so I need a new outer CV joint...
