Default Question about A4 issues...

Hi,
A few questions for you all. I'm looking at buying at 98 A4 fairly cheaply. It has high mileage (which I'm not too concerned about). But the current owner says that the ABS and Airbag warning lights are on. Do you all know whether these are cheap problems to resolve? Also he says that one of the rear bearings might need replacing. Anyone know how much it would cost to replace these?
Lastly, from reading posts on this forum, I'd probably like to replace the timing belt. How much does it cost to replace these?
Thanks all!!

How many miles does it exaclty have? You should definatly have the timing belt and water pump replaced. Probably the theromstat as well. I just bought a 97 2.8l A4 w/ 97k miles for $6,000. I thought it was a good deal at first, after I drove it home 1st gear makes a loud clunk noise and I get a damn loud humming noise up front. So I am probably going to need a trans rebuild and a hub wheel bearing. Make sure you test EVERYTHING at this car and don't run into hassles like i did...

can't tell you what's wrong with your ABS system, you'll have to pull the codes with an obd2 reader and post them here for us. the rear wheel bearing is about 60 bucks if you want to do it yourself...probably about 150 at a shop...the timing belt ranges from ~350 (doing it yourself) to 1000+...average price at an independent mechanic is probably about 700 bucks..make sure you research the timing belt job on this forum so you don't leave anything out (belts, tensioner, rollers, water pump, thermostat, snub mount, front cam seals)

Like bent said, get the codes, You may be lucky and just have to have the code reset.

I had to replace one of my ABS sensors and it ran about $400-500 with labor. Granted it was pretty smashed/corroded up and took a while to drill out all the copper wire and stuff so that added to the price a little.

thanks for the info. I would not have hesitated in buying the car if it didn't have such high miles on it..150k miles. What do you think about Audi's with hi miles? Too risky? I'll see if I can get some more info from the current owner..

Well if a car has been taken care of and wasn't driven hard its whole life then I think most engines can last past 200k...

I agree, 150k really isnt too much to worry about, especially as they cancoem quite cheap.

I just picked up an A4 2.4 V6 SE, 1999 with 106k miles on the clock (£5k) and it runs like a dream.

Just need to get onto replacing my timing belt, etc.

not had a V6 before, so at the moment wondeing if the formiddable sounds of air intake is normal ?

Sounds cool anyways!!!
