Default Questions on a 2001 turbo. Oil gelling?

Hey everyone i was the noob who was posting countless questions on how to mod a 97 quattro 12v with 100k on it!!!!!!!! well thanks to sum of the knowledge found here and a little common sense of my own i took it back just it time and now am looking at a 2001 A4 Quattro Turbo 5speed. it has 53k and the dealer is selling for 16k. i am going to try and work a cheaper deal tommorrow.

Now for my question, how well can it be maintained??? I am reading countless problems mainly concerning the Turbo engine and how people are saying it dies out on them. I looked into it even further and found out that the dealer suggested maintainence was to change the oil at every 10k service! Now i do not believe any car should have the oil changed every 10k let alone a Turbo!!!!! I have read that the only major motor problem was the engine oil gelling.

Now i believe that if u actually used good synthetic, changed the oil every 3k and added sum extra for burnt oil every now and then you would be fine. Could it be that the people with problems were the ones that had Turbos and only changed the oil at the dealer service at 10k? Please, any advice at all on this situation or on the car I am about to buy will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. what should I look for on an 01 1.8T with 53,000k???

good quality Mobil 1 synth oil and filter change every 5 to 6k will keep the turbo fit ( sludging/gelling only happens when using cheap oil )

I also had gelling/mayo probs with a cracked head gasket on a '87 Nippon Cherry. Car was a beater. Paid $470.00 for it and it lasted 8 months... Worth EVERY penny, IMHO Just wanted to chime in that oil mileage wasn't the ionly reason for it to gell. BTW, I never got around to changing teh oil in teh Cherry. Dint need to. Added 1 quart every 5 fillups... constant supply of fresh oil for the mota

10k with full sytnth is normal depending on how you drive its whats recommended by Audi but most do it a 5-6k, 600-800 miles for the filter is way too soon change it when you change the oil at 5-6k

changing your oil that often is not necessary. You can go at least 3-4k miles without an oil change as long as you are using synthetic. Synthetic doesnt break down and sludge up like mineral oil. The 1.8t abuses oil pretty bad, but you deffinately dont need to change it that often. You must be spending at least $40 every couple months for an oil change/filter at that rate!!

Quality full synthetic Mobil 1 or Castrol, Use the larger size filter and change the oil every 5K miles.
