Replace All Four Tires?

I have a 2006 AWD 2.0T A4 which picked up a nail this past weekend. This morning, the dealer says that I need to replace all 4 tires. I'm thinking about putting the new tires on the front only. I understand that Audi recommends replacing all four, but that doesn't make much sense. Anyone else have thoughts about this?

just repair the tyre, why on earth would they say change all the tyres[:-]

The nail that went into the tire made a very significant hole. The nail was quite large. It looked like a mini stake.

ask if it can be repaired by a tyre fitter ( not the dealer ) if not replace that wheel only, do you have a full size spare wheel? have them fit that and the other new tyre to the front and put the worn one as a spare that way you have 2 new tyres on the front;)

How worn are the tires? if there IS significant tread left you can replace the fronts. If the tires are pretty worn, you should replace all four. The reason is because worn tires have a different circumfrance than new tires, and on an all wheel drive it puts stress on the car due to wheels turningat different speeds all the time.

strange answer there but im not going into 4x4 cars nor am I even going to explain the above answer^^ but if the tyres are worn and they need change then change them if not then only change/repair the damaged one

bishops answer is right, same reason you shouldnt put a wider tire in the rear on an all wheel drive, due to the added weight and friction(due to larger contact patch)the tranny will wear faster and you will have problems with rotation and what not.

its not the added weight of friction that causes the tranny to wear, they can handle that, its the fact that alot of times when people stagger the wheels the get the over all rolling radius off becasue they either dont know or arent smart enough to get it right and have the radius be the same
