ORIGINAL: voltus
when you said swap it, do you mean swap the whole cluster and all of my car information will show up in the used one without reprogramming? or you were referring to just swap the LCD, including the LCD driver chip on the ribbon cable attached to the LCD?

Have you ever tried to just disconnect and connect the original cluster? I am wondering if the information of the odometer/vehicle will stay just by doing this.. I hope the information is not lost just by doing this so I dont have to go the dealer to have it reprogrammed.

I could not believe AUDI let this annoying design defect out of their sight..
thx
The info, is all IN THE CLUSTER. So what ever car it is taken out of, that is the information it will have. You can swap it from a TIP to a 5-6sp, but that is about it. You can not reprogram a used cluster, only a brand new one will accept mileage coding.

If you want to keep things the same, then swap the LCD, if you want it easy, swap the whole cluster, really changing out the cluster is 3-5min.

basically the answer is ( does the car run well? does it feel good? did you do all the tests? any oil-coolant leaks? any history )

one thing i'd add is that when I was looking for my audi (ended up with a 2000 audi a4 1.8tq) ALL the cars with the LCD display had pixel problems. The car I ended up getting just happened to have the fewest dead pixels. If you got the cluster from a junk yard i'd say there is a VERY good chance that that LCD will have similar problems or if not will develop them soon enough that it's not work the trouble.

Has anyone bought or priced a new LCD from a dealer??

I'm wondering if they even offer just that part?

If it is possible I would opt to get a new LCD for my 99.5and solder it in.

The dealer will not sell you a display for just the cluster, as it's much easier to just replace it. You can buy the LCD yourself, but most that are in stock are overseas like SACER.
