Default Rich or lean

So I asked the guy at the car shop if he could tell me why my check engine light was on and he said that he got a code that was 60 or 61 and said the engine is either running lean or rich, but his computer could not tell him any more. Do I need to take it to the dealer? Any other guidance or things that I should know. Thanks for the help

David

What engine and year do you have? AutoZone reads the codes free.
60 and 61 mean nothing. Buy a code reader or a VAG-COM and
read the codes youself.

Check you plugs, if they're real black then you're running rich. As for lean, take a high speed WOT highway run, if you're running that lean you will hit limp mode. He should be able to give you more info than that, I would try taking it somewhere else and see what they tell you. Post your code, the guys here are uber helpfull.

No dont go playing around much with WOT if you have a lean issue. Limp mode isnt always going to save your ***.I had lean issues last summer and was detonating all over the place and only went into limp mode a couple times because of it. Ended up being a bad MAF for me. Definately get the codes read by a good code reader before you got WOTing. You can kill your engine if you detonate too much.

Most of the time rich and lean conditions are caused by MAF sensors, clean it with some computer keyboard cleaner.
