Its not bad to shift at 5 grand assuming you keep your car maintained.
I drive pretty agressively, but I don't shift at 5K "all the time".

Normal daily driving you wanna shift between 3-4K.

Just depends on how you are driving. If i'm not feeling in a frisky mood, i'll shift around 3-4k, if i'm out to go fast then 5-7k.

On a related note....how about downshifting. For example....if I drop gears and my rpms kick up to 5k, is that ok? At what point does it become unhealthy for the car? Thanks.

That is what the redline is for... you try and stay out of it. 5k is out of the redline, but approaching it... so you want to be careful up there. It's harder to accelerate the motor past 5k though, than to hold it at 5k. accelerating and decelerating is hardest on your motor. you could prolly cruise at 5k for a little bit, at god knows how fast that'd be (pretty fast to cruise at).
