ShortShifter

Hey guys....I recently purchased a new car a 2002 Volkswagon GTI VR6 6 Speed 24v.........i am still keeping my Audi....but I have always wanted a GTI and I just had to get it.......well anyway i tried going to a VW forum but I did not like it compared to this forum.....and besides you cant beat the audiforum members!:D.....anyway I was interested in getting a shortshifter because I heard they are very helpful and help you shift faster.....but is their any other reason for them? I dont quite understand the usefulness of them.

RE: ShortShifter

It significantly shortens the throw between gears allowing for quicker shifts and better control of the gear box. Depending on which one you buy, it shortens the throw about an inch or so in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Actually, the fulcrum is reduced by a certain percentage (15, 20, 30 percent) depending on maker. In addition, some makers shorten the shaft up to 1.5 inches. Some cheaper units just have shorter shafts - these don't create the same effect as a fulcrum point reduction.

The effect creates a shorter throw distance from gear to gear. It also creates a slightly more stiffer feel when shifting because the reduced fulcrum point requires more torque (= less leverage) to move the shaft. Shifts thus can be quicker for those who need to row quickly through the gears for racing or other purposes.
