Simple Carbon Buildup Question

Not to bring this topic up again but i have a question regarding the build up as i'm looking to buy an A4.

I'm not doubting the build up problem exists but obviously people know about it and still buy the cars. I have spoken to friends of mine with A4s and they say if its happening they never noticed it. No sluggish driving even when the car hits 40-50k miles. So my question is:

-Is this whole carbon buildup problem blown out of proportion? I'm not going to be modding the car or tuning the engine or racing it. Am I still getting into trouble buying a car with a known problem and no known fix. Am i going to not just see slight hp losses as the car ages but also check engine lights, misfires, and engines not starting. I get no car runs fine forever, but i dont want to buy a broken car before its ever been driven.

-would this problem keep you from buying the car?

also, while I know that an Audi will be more expensive and less reliable then a Lexus/Acura and I am perfectly ok with that since after driving all of the above, the Audi is a MUCH nicer ride, I was wondering if you think the Audi can be a reliable car if its maintained properly. I'm very good with following a car's maintenance schedule, and if I hear a funny sound all of a sudden, I always go and check it out before it develops into something bigger.

-So if I keep an Audi well maintained, should it be a reliable (and not a money pit) car after 8 years and 130k miles? I'm just assuming that's about how long I'd keep the car, though if it keeps running well, no reason to get ride of it.

I just spent $1100 on this problem on my A3. I have been religious with the maintenance and gas quality. I called AoA and am being told to "stop driving in stop and go traffic" so much. I am so mad.
