I just put a new turbo on and want to insure I don't have a sludge problem. If I were to take off the oil pump, does the pickup go directly from there down into the oil pan? If so, I could force oil down that way and clean any gunk off the pickup screen, then drain the oil again and get much of the sludge out. (Assuming there is sludge) What do you all think?

 

Heres a question i asked on the bobistheoilguy.com forums concerning the 1.8t. I ended up flushing with kerosene twice (1/2 quart each time with new oil too), then running dino 10/40 in there for 10 minutes after the oil temp got up, then changing yet again to 5w40 synthetic.

yes you could but I would flush paraffin/diesel fuel down the pipe its more liquid than oil and cleans better and then oil to clean the pipe out "ensure you get it all out of the sump though" it seems a strange way to do the job why not drop the sump and clean it properly, it sounds like your looking for short cuts and its not worth it in the long run

 

I just had my car in for an oil pump failure and sludge problem. Cost me $2K to get fixed and im lucky I didn't damage any internals apparently - still talking with Audi to find out if I can get reimbursed.

Apparently to get at your oil pump you have to drop the sump and its a good amount of labor. I think the quote was 6 hours just to drop it, look at it, and put it back in - but that was from the stealership. I'd for sure get it looked at and if you have any sludge order a new oil pump. You might as well get a new pump, its like cleaning out and re-using an oil filter. Once you have sludge in there its pretty hard to get out. I took at look at my old oil pump and I wouldn't want to re-use that thing.

There are various ways to flush the system though, there is something called an AUTO RX flush which seems to be highly rated. I'd call around and get quotes, I think it was only $129.99.

 

I would think that doing those $5.00 flushes that you put in just before you change the oil would be enough, if you did it every time.

 

where would you guys buy the parts for this type of maintenance.

Well, I don't have any reason to think that I have sludge other than the turbo failed. But, the car has 125k miles. I'm driving the car for the first time since installing the turbo. It all seems to be working fine. I'm running some dino oil right now. I'm going to take it real easy on the turbo until I feel confident that it's getting oil. Then, I'll change to some good synthetic oil again. I haven't been able to find a good way to test the oil pressure. Where do you get a gauge for that?

 

Get that oil out of there! Not using synthetic oil and smaller oil filter causes the sludge problem! [:@]

I'm going to try to get mine changed tomorrow (scheduled) and will ask (again, they didn't last time) for an oil pressure check (is it off stock specs?) and I'm going to ask for an oil detergent to run for around 2k miles or whatever they suggest and I expect to drive it normal: hard.

 

what about seafoam?
can it be used on turbo cars?
