Default smoky engine

well, last night i just upgraded my headlights and got some apexcone HID kit for a deal, at $175u.s. for 8000k. after i installed the kit i went for a test drive and notice a rubber burning smell coming from the engine. i pop open the hood and notice alot of smoke coming from under the motor somewhere on the passenger side. my car has about 90k and im not shure if the previous owner change the timing belt or water pump, could this be one of the problems? what should i check first when going under the car? also my car is a 99.5 a4 1.8t tip. and has 90k. thanks for any suggestions

u might have a oil leak near your turbo
or a bad hose
or
did u secure the new HID wires so that they arent moving around freely where they can melt on part of the engine

Things smell different when they burn. Was it plastic burn or oil burn? There is a breather assembly that can quite often crack (It's on the drivers side if your in America) If it was on the turbo side then I would recomend buying some degreaser giving it a really good clean and then go on the hunt for the oil leak. I find it easier to do these things when it is dark & you use a lead light or pen lite. Make sure the engine is hot while hunting. Apart from adding the challange of not to get burnt, it also will leak more freely due to the oil being thin.
