Default Something smells funny

So I get off work and the guy who originally picked the car up for me wants to test drive the car with the new chip. I told him to warm up the car a little before wailing on the engine. He got the temp gauge up to about the firstr or second line and gunned it. I thought his shifting was a little hard but I dont really know how to shift good, due to the fact that I just learned a month ago. So anyways he goes to 80 then slows and lets me drive. So I decide to launch the car and when I did it held over 6500rpm the whole way through first so I slowed down, never shifting into second. Then he got into his maxima and we raced and he beat the **** out of me. So I stop for a red light and I smell this nasty smell coming into my window. So I stoped the car in a parking lot and it smelled really strong on the drivers side only. So I popped the hood and smelled around to see where it was coming from. It was coming somewhere on the right side of my engine, and it almost smelled like something was burning. Does anyone have an idea what this could be???

Oh and I also droped a quarter into my engine compartment leaning over and it hit the pan at the bottom. Will this be a problem??

Thanks for any feedback

There are two extremely nasty smells that I can think of that come from hard driving.

#1 Clutch. If you know what burnt clutch smells like you would know and you would say it smelled like heaven, but people who don't know say it smells nasty. Ha ha. It smells a lot like burning brakes. Or hot metal. Or welding.

#2 Gear Oil. Gear oil smells aweful. Like skunk. If you get it on you, it smells soooo freaking bad. You could go to Walmart and buy some good 10W90 and sniff. He he don't huff gear oil. Anyway, if you burnt up your transmission, transfer case, or front/rear end gaskets you would leak gear oil all over the place. There is a check point on the top of all these devices to make sure you still have gear oil.

Those are the only things I can think of especially for what you were doing.

Oh yeah, but I think Audi uses a refined gear oil so don't put walmart 10w90 in your car. Look for what is OE. Seals can weep with out blowing out. It is a really sticky oil and it would be all over the underside of your car.

How would I know if the clutch was done. And is it normal when doing a WOT launch that the RPM's will hold at 6500+ in first?

Well if it was done, the clutch would not engage and you could step on the gas and redline with out moving.

But if you burnt the clutch a little good for you. Darn the man! Just remember you'll have to replace yours sooner now so did you really beat the man? :-P Burnt clutch is nothing (in moderation)

Yep, I love the smell of my clutch burning, but all my friends get grossed out. I hate the fact that every time I smell it, it means sooner than later I'm gonna need to put a dent in my wallet.

yes it will effect regular shifting until you let it cool down completely and yes that definitely sounds like burning clutch

the quarter thing all depends on where it landed...if by pan you mean the skidplate (plastic piece that protects from rocks & debris), than no it's not going to cause any problems and it's probably gone by now
