This sounds like a major transmission repair...any idea?
 

I can press in the clutch, and run through all the gears. 1-5 ...and even reverse. But....

When I start to release the clutch, all *&% breaks loose. Horrible grinding/clanking noise. I can hear a rotation/spinning going on, but the chunky grinding sound is painful.

Any ideas? I'm debating on the Audi dealership or sending it to a certified shop. I ***just bought the thing (small warantee is over, so this is outta pocket).

Whole transmission?....clutch?....flywheel? Arguh!!

This happened to me once. Turned out to be a sheared off input shaft to the tranmission. Obviously the car wouldn't move at all. Can yours?

nope. car does not move at_all. I can still hear the chucky grinding when I push the car (while in neutral).

I just talked to my mechanic, says it 'sounds' like the driveshaft or something along those lines. Getting towed again today over to the shop. Stay tuned.

Yeah, if if still grinds while in neutral and pushed, I'd say the driveshaft is an issue. That should be less expensive than tranny work. In the interest of saving money, I'd recommend a non-dealer shop as driveshaft repairs are fairly simple. I wish you the best of success.

You Nailed it ChrisB. I had it towed to Art Ryan Motorwerks here in St. Pete FL (he is a former Audi/BMW service Manager...and has 65hr rates!). Great guy.

A clutch was installed in the car (only 50k miles. I bought it as a off-corp lease vehicle), and when they installed it they left the driveshaft connections loose. Doh <smacks forhead>!

Whew!! Looks like with towing, repair, and parts I am looking at about 3-4 hundred. I really lucked out. So, a clutch is 2g in this car? Wow, that is scary stuff.

David_K - no, unfortuinatly the 2000 has a 3yr/50k warrenty.
