spuratic drops in oil pressure???? ideas??
I have a 99 1.8t a4. installed an oil pressure gage due to the light going off. It is now dropping when i strart to drive. Local small fix it shop won't go into the oil pan,... he is suggesting it is the bearings...?? anyone familiar with this? another mechanic friend it could be something with the oil pan, or pump or something down there... any one know of who is an expert in the DEnver area??
Exact same problem as me. Are you sure you are actually dropping oil pressure? If it as soon as you start then it could be something as stupid as your oil is too thick. Anyway, a good way to clear mild sludge is by adding 500ml (dont know conversion sorry) of Kerosene to your oil when your car is cold, start it & let it run for 15 mins ALWAYS keeping an eye on the oil pressure & listening for a "ticking noise up the top end. The chemical make up of Kero (100% liquid hydrocarbons) is brilliant for cleaning your engine without compromising it. After 15 minutes thouroughly drain oil, change oil filter and add a 5w or 10w oil. Mild sludge will be gone.
Dropping the oil pan is not too hard but it is time consuming. If you need a DIY i'll dig up mine. You shouldn't have a bearing issue unless your car has done more than 200,000m . . . . .or unless it been thrashed to ****. PM me if you got any other questions.

Its probably a plugged oil pump. I had that problem. Is the "red" oil light coming on? If it is, DONT DRIVE YOUR CAR.
It means that your oil pump is starving the engine of oil, therefore not lubricating the components. I had this problem, brought it in as soon as my light came on - no engine damage. Some people have to replace their entire engines due to melting and frying internal components.
If you didn't damage anything, it'll cost you around $1500 at the audi dealership for an engine flush and new parts (oil pump and pvc pipes). Its about 8-10 hours of labor.
