why do you need to change the bearings? What are your symptoms?
Many times people hear a plastic on plastic rubbing noise. This is a result of the spiral spring making contact with the column housing. This is not a detrimental problem and can only be fixed by changing the spring. I have this noise and will probably change it in the spring. (its a big job)

Nope, definitely the bearings. Noise is not the problem, it's free play in the vertical direction. In excess of 5mm at the rim. Audi don't list spares for the column, they say 'service is by replacement only' which will cost more than the car is worth!!
