upper control arms
i just finished and man is was it a larger project than i antisipated. i had to remove the whole front strut and shock assembly. i am greatfull for this wonderfull product called PB blaster. i started off trying to remove the bolt refered to as the "devil bolt" which is the bolt that pinches the control arms to the steering nuckle. the bolt was stuck like a mother fuker so i squirted this pb plaster stuff all over it and let it sit for a day. got out there tonight and all i had to do was lightly tap the bolt and it slid right out. YAY...... so now everything is back together and everything runs smooth, no more kerplunks when pulling in to my driveway. this brings up a question though, i drove around and everything drove perfect i mean perfect, so do i really need to have my car alligned?

RE: upper control arms
in theory, i guess not being that everything has returned to the home position, but better safe than sorry, especially with the colder weather come, it would suck to get stuck in the snow with some inner or outer worn tires, unless you don't get snow.

RE: upper control arms
I wish PB Blaster would do that for mine. I soaked it with that shit and it's still stubborn. I'm gonna try it again right now, though. Wish me luck!

If I ever see this PB blaster you speak of, I'll add it to my arsenal.

RE: upper control arms
Yeah, it was at the locallly owned automotive store. They also sell it at Napa. And it helped me turn my driver's side pinch bolt almost a full quarter turn tonight. Gaah. Tomorrow, the wheelbearing housing is coming off, and that little motherfucker is going to meet its demise at the hands of my drill.

RE: upper control arms
Hey. I had a ton of luck with a dremel, hand sledge, and an air hammer.. pound the shet out of it with the sledge till its flat with the WB housing . Take your dremel and drill out as much as you can. the air hammer will take it out in about 15 seconds.
I spent 2 days on mine till i figured this out. |
RE: upper control arms
Is there any write-up about how to replace the upper control arms? my car's got that clunking noise as well. i changed the tie-rod ends earlier which looked really worn out but the clunk is still there.

http://www.customperf.com/Installation_fauca.htm
this was all i could find, it wasnt much help but i also used a haynes manuel and that helped a bit. both manuels neglect to mention that the linkage from the lower control arm to the sway bar needs to be removed in order to get the suspension low enough to remove and reinstall the bottom of the strut. |
