vacuum leaks??
 

does anybody know how to check for vacuum leaks on a 12v 2.8quattro?

The most effective method is to use a smoke machine, but if you don't have that you can use good old propane when its running around the engine, if the rpm's go racing up you have a leak. Just don't smoke when your doing it LOL.

for the propane test, basically he is saying while the engine is running pop the hood and release propane around the area of the vacuum lines. If the rpms jump you have a leak because the vacuum sucked up propane gas and burnt it.

Yeah and the smoke machine is something we use at the dealer which consists of i thinks its an argon compressed gas tank and an oil based machine that makes smoke. You un-hook the mass airflow and hook up the machine and pump smoke into the intake and you should see smoke coming out of where its leaking, its the best way to find any type of leak including boost leaks.

I've used starter fluid. Spray that around the vacuum lines, it does the same thing as propane if youdont have a tank available.

Good suggestion...I used Sambuca last night, but that didn't work as well as I thought it would.

No it won't damage your engine but it might damage you if your not carefull, you can do what Cruz734 said and use an ether based starting fluid from cheveron or something like that.
