Is the ross tech system from awe a good starting point for becoming a good vag com user? For 230 dollars, is the cable and software download a good deal?? This would also let me download the giac program to switch the files on my chip?

Yes, when you download the GIAC software to your laptop, you can use the VAG cable to switch programs (assuming you've purchased the extra programs).
