It can be caused by a loose gas cap, bad gass cap, rust on the filler neck where the gas cap seats, bad vsv valves, leaks in the vaccume hoses running to the evap canister, or a bad evap canister. That is whyservice dept.say not to fill up with the engine running. The evap system on non intrusive systems test vaccume pressure after the car is shut off usually only a couple times a week, so if you got gas and later started the car and the engine light came on (even if it was a couple of days later) I would start with the gas cap and clear codes, if it comes on again check the vsv valves (usually one somewhere on or near the intake and the other on the evap canister) and clear codes and if it comes on again it would be the canister given there is no vaccumes leaks in those hoses. I would miagine you should be able to do an active test of the vsv valves and pump with the vag com tool but have never used on. If you can when the valves open and close during the test you should hear clicking indicating the valve is opening and closing. If there isn't an active test or you can't find it it can also be donewith a hand held vaccume testser.
