What oil filter do you recommend?
 

Hi, I am planning on changing my oil this weekend, I will probably be using Valvoline Max life full synthetic 5w30. What filter would you recommend? Thanx in advance. One more thing, Is their any special tool that I will need to remove the filter or can I just take it off with my hands?

Use a strap wrench or oil filter pliers to remove it. You can get these at autozone.

Basically Mann filter(Big One) or any of the other ones listed above go big. And you cant grip with hands get the strap wrench is a huge PITA do to with out it.

I use the big Mann filter also. I think it's part number is MN-301. Emphasize think on that one.
Also...I switched to Mobil 1 0w40 full synthetic and my car has been running better than ever. It is even quiter, which I am loving. I thought it would get louder. Just an fyi ....

Go to wal-mart and buy the claw type filter wrench - best $3 I ever spent

standard filter and Mobil 1 ( full ) synthetic 0/W30-40 best for the turbo;)

Mobile 1 0w40 & OEM filter. The filter will be cheaper if you buy it at a VW dealer.

Im actually about to do an oil change also. 2 questions....
1) Ive searched all over the site, everyone says get a "bigger" oil filter (mann or mahle or kn), but I dont exactly know what this means, does anyone have a link or part number to some ones you know are good?
2) Last time I got it changed by this old russian race car driver who owns a shop and does european cars in the area (crazy bastard) and put 15W50 mobile 1 full synth in without telling me before, and said it was great.... never heard ofthis, I was planning on changing to 5w40 mobile 1 full synth. good idea, other reccomendations?

I've wondered this for a while, and it's related to this topic so I'll ask it here. if I go to the VW dealer and ask for a filter for a 1.8T passat, obviously that filter will work on my A4 but will that be a "big" filter or a "small" filter? how will I know what the "big" filter looks like?
