What is the best bang-for-my-buck upgrade on performance that I can do to my 97 A4 1.8T Quattro Auto? What upgrades should I stay away from? What upgrades will do nothing except cost money?

No buffalo chips please. Upgrades that won't help you in performance are obvious... but I assume you're asking about which of the mods that increase hp and torque have the least increase per dollar. My advice... stick to a few simple mods and call it good. Chip and exhaust.

also get an upgraded diverter valve when you chip your car. you can get a '710N' diverter valve at any audi/vw dealership for around 40 bucks

how much are you selling for?

 

I have no idea yet. The GIAC K04 that I need is about $600 and I paid $450 for my APR. The issue is just how much it costs to get the chips switched since they are soldered into place. I'd be willing to help someone save at least $100 on the chip after installation.
