Default *(^*&^@#% sunroof

I have read several postings about sunroof issues, and have tried all the tricks, Mine is still frozen open.

Back Story: 1997 A6 Avant Quattro Automatic 172k miles. Alternator goes bad, get it replaced, charge battery. Car works ok for a weekend and a day. Open sunroof. On Tuesday the battery is dead. I jump it to move the car around and charge the battery overnight. Close the sunroof. It pours rain that evening.

Next morning, I find the sunroof open and the car soaked. Battery still dead. I take it in and it has lost a cell. Replace battery, begin drying car out.

Now, new battery in place, radio code entered, door locks ok, car is almost dry, sunroof still won't close.

Tried the disconnect of the battery trick, opened the switch up and cleaned the contacts, checked fuses, even tried the silly little wrench. Nothing works. I can hear something clicking when I move the switch, so there is power going to the system, but nothing is happening.

I have not yet removed the headliner. I have never done that in a car before.

I hate my Audi!

Please help. Thanks much!

Can't you shut it manually with the sunroof wrench located behing the sunroof panel?

Sorry, I see now that you tried the wrench.

Angry The Little Wrench

I tried the wrench and could not move it either direction at all. The wrench was beginning to bend in my hand, I decided to not force it beyond that.

Thumbs up Fixed it!

I was reading about the zero position of the motor. So I tried an alternative of that. I unscrewed the motor with my torx, and ran it back and forth with the switch. It worked ok, so I left the switch in the full open location, where the sunroof was stuck at.

I carefully screwed it back on, and everything worked fine. The culprit was a mis-alignment of teeth on the belt and the position of the motor.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

BTW, the motor and the little wrench are under the plastic peice where the map lights are. Pull it off from the windshield down towards the back seat. 2 clips hold it in place.
