Default 00 Audi A6 4.2 Quattro.

My brother in law has an opportunity to pick one of these up that has no engine with only 88k miles on it for like 3k. I was looking around a little and I was curious what engines we could drop in with little to no modding of the engine bay and wiring harness?

Also does anyone have any sources for engines that aren't to expensive? We found a couple on ebay and what not. We're trying to decide if it's feasible in his budget before he goes buying the car.

Not worth it IMO. You can get a well running example for about $8500 comfortably. You are looking at least $5K plus for motor and installation.

$8500 !!!????? I would never pay more than $5000 for a 9 year old A6 unless it was absolutly mint and came with a year's free supply of Dunkin Donuts Coffee.

As for putting a motor in it -- Audis are tempermental enough without having a heart transplant. I can just imagine the problems with getting things to work correctly.

Kbb is showing 9-11k for an 00 4.2. From what I'm looking at the original engine is going to be around 1500. So 4500 total for a car that would go for even 8.5k is pretty good. I don't know how putting in the exact engine it came with could be a problem?

I'd like to see an 00 A6 for sale for 5k I can't find one.

Ok upon search you can get a 99-01 V6 model for around 5-6k. The V8 model is a bit more. I thought these were going for more though. So you may be correct it may not be worth while.

KBB prices are way over inflated for Audis. In the real world they sell for lot's less unless your the seller and get lucky or the the buyer and don't know what your doing. As for finding one for $5K - they are usually advertised for more but good ones can be gotten for $5K without a problem.. There's even a guy on here that is asking about a 2000 4.2 A6 with 93K for $6K. I'd bet he can get it for less if he showed the seller cash...

as for the exact motor replacement - Good luck! - Audis control systems have many quirks that make them go haywire when they see someting they don't recognize. Finding an exact replacement will be difficult!

Get the vehicle for $1000 and you have a chance of making out OK!

Not worth $3k. I would pass on that deal, will most likely turn into a headache especially since the old motor has already been pulled(wiring or other things could have been damaged during removal).
