Does " What is 20% off $70? " sound right to you? you could have just spelled "of" wrong though it seems you just left it out. If you are using the answer from a question to determine if someone is smart or stupid, you should at least ask the question correctly.

The question is asked correctly, nothing is spelled wrong. How did you come to the conclusion that I used bad grammar, or that the question is not written correctly?

The discount is $14 and the net is $56. But then again, I own the A6 below and bought at 2003 A4 3.0 MT6 for my then high-school daughter four years ago, making me a certifiable idiot.

"What is 20% off $70?"

It should either read "What is 20% off *of* $70?" or "What is 20% *of* $70?". The way it's asked makes it hard to tell if you're asking for the amount of the discount or the amount after discount. That said, the answers you said they gave you (other than $14) don't make any sense.

To help PEOPLE UNDERSTAND!!!! LOOK: What is $14 off $70?
Maybe brain cells will wake up now! If they are not forever lost already...

Jteesy, of is just another word to make the $70 more clear, it is not required in this sentence!

(EDIT: it might actually confuse brain dead people even more.)

Either you need to learn what a basic sentence is again, or learn basic logic (from the 1st or 2nd grade)...

I DO REALIZE, that this question is actually quite rare. It seems that people are not exposed to such questions often. People learn better through repetition (like chinese people), and not by actually understanding things, lol. I couldn't stand repetition, I only learned through understanding, so thats why its hard for a lot of people... The question is actually quite rare in real life, its not easy coming up with similar questions... Thats pretty interesting...

Take the wheel off the car...
Take the wheel off of the car...
Means exactly the same thing!
"of" : it just making it more clear, if you think and understand.

The "What is" part is just english (to make it an actual sentence), the actual math problem is 20% off $70.
