1998 a6 transmission
 

well hopefully u guys might have some answer, like most people here i believe that buying a second hand audi is like taking out a morgage. The problem i seem to be having has come and gone for the most part.

I had recently taking my car in for a service for trans and exhaust leak. no the car is shifting very weird, at starting of it sometimes slips in neutral and shifting between gears almost feels like it jumps from 3 to 5th and the suddenly back to forth. braking is also an issue coz as soon as your to a complete stop the car feels like it slams into 1st or even neutral.

please help?????????????

Sounds like the trans is not full of fluid. Have it checked by someone who knows what they are doing.

I second the trans oil comments and stress having someone that knows what they are doing (AUDI Experience) check the level. -

FYI - it has to be at a specified temperature to be checked and it requires special trans fluid -- I know at least three peole who have lost their audi transmissions because someone put the wrong oil in them.

You had a transmission leak fixed....?

no according to the mechanic it was a coolent leak, but from what i've read about what could cause this trans problem its starting to sound more like a trans leak, and its the drop in fluid thats causing it.
anyway the car is going in today and i'll find out what the problem is. this thing is that it just recently had a trans service and thats probably where everything went wrong. so put it this way atleast with it having a recent service it should still be under their waranty.

Lets get this right

You had the vehicle in for service.
1 They fixed a water leak
2 They did transmission service.
3. now the trans is acting funny

You don't tell us about the people that did the work.
Do they understand Audis or are they just a repair shop?
Many of the non-Audi guys think they can add std trans fluid to the overflow hole and it will be OK.

Audi transmissions ar every particular about the type of fluid and the amount.


Don't let them off the hook -- if they did it wrong you could be in for a big expense. As a minumum if they used the wrong fluid you'll need a complete flush including the torque convertor. If they used the correct fluid they need to check the level using the right procedure.

By the S amount from the receipt one can tell if the proper fluid was used- scan the receipt and post it here.
From now on one should pay attention to details and post here the particular specifics.
Let them (the shop that did the “service” ) describe the procedure to you and post here.
Let them check the level again. Make a log – dates, places , individuals, actions, etc.
It could be very helpful later.

Well thanx everyone for the input, well i got the word back. And the car will now have to become a parts car or something coz I'm not spending the money to replace that transmission.
Aparently the clutch is gone along with metal shaving or whatever else they found in the pan. so gears is shot too.

Your A-hub probably failed, just like all the rest. I should look like this:
