2.7T Aux Cooling Pump

Just a quick couple of questions...

I have a 04 A6 2.7T Quattro S Line that recently developed a coolant leak most times when I turn the engine off.

Had it diagnosed as the Aux Cooling Pump and plan to change it myself (some good tutorials on line + the Bentley book) but here are the questions:

1) Can I drive the car for the next week or so until I have the time to change the pump or will this cause more issues. The leak does not occur every time I stop the motor - appears that it only happens after a long drive or if I park it as angles (on the uphill driveway).

2) Can someone recommend the best place to purchase the Pump and associated hoses? Should I go through Audi Parts Dept. or ?

3) This brings me back to the question why does it leak only when the car is shut down or is it leaking all the time and I just don't notice it?

Thanks for any advise...

The pump gets activated at 112C of the coolant.
You might check your fans for proper operations as it is not typical to have it on.
Buy the pump at the place you usually buy parts.
Audi will sell the same pump x2 $$$.

Thank you for the info nemohm, do you think it's safe to drive for a few days?

As for the fans, they appear to be working but we've had a hot spell in CA (90+) over the past few days - perhaps thats why the pump is kicking in. Coolant Temp has been dead center of the gauge at all times (don't know what that is in degrees) and Oil between 225 - 235 - any thoughts?

Read my post "Fan redundancy" you might find some useful info there.

The temp gauge is designed to be in the center over a range of engine temperatures so don't use that as a guide. You will be fine as long as you check the coolant level daily.

Good luck,

Bob

If this is the aux cooling pump on the rear of the engine, I drove mine for over a year and 000s of miles with a slow leak. I just had to top off the coolant periodically. It was fixed at 89k and I have 178k on the A6 now.
