2001 Audi A6 2.7tt value & repair estimates
My mum took her exceptionally clean <43k miles 2001 Audi A6 2.7tt in for a checkup when coolant & oil levels were a bit low. Mechanic estimated $5k to repair oil leaks (valve cover gaskets & right side turbo seal) and coolant leak (pull upper & lower intake manifolds). He told her car isn't worth repairing, which I find hard to believe. Thought I'd better come here and seek some wise guidance...

What it's worth to you and what it is worth on the market are two different things. My 2003 A6 with 236k runs great, body starting to rust, and I had no takers at $3k. Yours is lower mileage but 2 years older. If it was mine, I would replace the valve cover gaskets (cheap) and carry around a couple quarts of coolant, checking and topping regularly. Yeah, a pita, but again cheap. Not sure about the turbo seal. If he is talking about replacing the turbo you are talking about pulling the engine and then you might as well do both -- that's about a $3-4k job. I have had slightly leaking turbos since 150k and have 236k on the car now. It does not need oil between changes (unlike my 2011) and I'll just do the maintenance and drive it until the turbos blow and then junk it. Net it out - do the inexpesnive maintenance, carry coolant, and keep your fingers crossed and about $4750 in your pocket.
