2004 2.7T BRAKES 19000 ???
Mind you this is my first Audi; My rear brakes are not just squeakingtheres a sudden sort of grinding sound?
That isn' the odd part, the car has only 19000 miles on it.Am i completely nuts or is 19000 miles a bit low to be needing new brakes?

Which would be why it' sisolated to the rear of the car and not the front?Any idea on what that should cost?

If the grinding is ONLY when you hit the brakes then you have no pad and chances are your rotor will need replacing as well. Also very pricey. Either way you will need to replace at least rotors and pads.

Maxxstl - this really depends and I agree with weed4life, grinding almost always means metal against metal obviously (unless you have major dust and or sand in your pads and rotors).
Trapped - sometimes squeeking can be due actually to slight movement with the pad and caliper - not just surface interference. A mechanic once told me that Ferraris used to come with a little packet of special duct tape to put on the brake pad that would eliminate slight movement from the pad.

Hah,ya know I actually haven't heard that, but it's definitely similar in logic. What's cool about the calipers on the 2000 and 2001 A6 2.7T is that they are considerably larger than those from the same bodystyle up through 2004. Guess Audi figured the brakes were over powering - the front calipers are f-ing massive for factory equipment!

Yeah, my friend has a passat (very similar to a6) and his calipers are tiny compared to mine. I might try to paint my calipers black in the near future!!! What type of break pads would you recomend. I hear Hwks are very good

maxxstl---the grinding doesn't necessarily mean that you need new calipers, however you will need new pads and rotors. if it's just started grinding, then the semimetallic compound on the pads has just worn off and the backing plates and rivets are now making contact with the rotors. you'd have to go for quitea while before you destroy the calipers. with that being said, if you are mechanically inclined, it will not be very expensive to replace these things. rear rotors are about $70 for the pair, and pads will be about $60 or so. if you can do it yourself, you're only looking at about $130-140. also, don't forget the little tool to screw in the caliper pistons. you can pick them up from just about any parts store, because the newer mustangs use the exact same thing for their calipers.
trapped---yes, the hawk pads are very nice, i ran the street compound pads on my cobra. very good stopping power, very little brake fade, and very low dust.
