2005 2.7TDI Timing Chain Snapped
I have a 2005 2.7TDI A6 with 15K miles. Recently I suffered a complete breakdown. Engine stopped whilst driving along and unable to start again. The vehicle was recovered and the Audi main dealer took a week to determine what was up. I get a call eventually saying that "...one of the timing chains has snapped..." and that Audi were looking into a repair or possibly a complete engine replacement. Apparently Audi often prefer an engine replacement as they can recover the old and try to figure out exactly what went wrong. Luckily the car is still under the Audi 3yr/60K mile warranty and they have acknowledged that labour and parts in this case are all covered. Thank god.
My question is this - does anyone know the exact configuration of "timing chains" in the new 2.7TDI? It sounds as though there's more than one and I'm trying to picture this in my mind. When the car failed I was able to turn the engine over - it sounded normal (ie. there was compression) but after a few attempts the starter wouldn't turn the engine at all even jumping from another car.
Has anyone had anything like this happen to them? Audi (UK) say this is the first 2.7TDI they've had fail like this (don't know whether this is bullsh*t or truth) which is why it's taking so long to fix. Any clues greatly appreciated. Thanks.

RE: 2005 2.7TDI Timing Chain Snapped
I don't have data on the 2005 tdi but here is a picture of the engine, its a V6 and has a timing belt as well as 2 timing chains at each end just like the 1.8t, your covered by the warranty 100% as is a 2005
