205/50/17 winter tires on 2001 4.2
I have a 4.2 with sport so I think the stock tires are 255/40/17. I also have some winter tires that I only used for about 3000km that are 205/50/17. According to the tire size calculator here http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html these two sizes are almost identical except for the width and I read that narrower tires are better in the winter anyway. Would it be possible to use these winter tires on the stock rims or are they too narrow? If I can't use them what do you think I should do? Get new rims for these tires or buy new tires for the stock rims. New tires would probably be cheaper and I just bought a house so I have no money.

The 255/40/17 ar enot stock on the 4.2 They are an option when you buy. I wouldnt sacrifice those rims for winter driving and the narrower tire will not fir properly. The best set-up for winter driving(snow and ice) for these cars are 16" rims with blizzak tires. Doesn't look as hot but its performance in the elements you should be concerned about. Check the AF classifieds. There are always guys upgrading downgrading. Rims don't have to be special. Just buy some steel black rims that are the same bolt pattern amd buy the tires. If our trying to save a buck look for those used tire places. We hae a couple here in Seattle and I wrapped my truck with 225/60/15 with rims for $400 and that was mounted and balanced. The tires had 75% tread. booyah

Thanks. Yeah, I should have said I have the sport upgrade. I'll check into the used option. Otherwise www.tiretrends.com has pretty good prices in Canada. Anyone have pics of an A6 with steel wheels?
