Default 95 Audi A6 tranny...

Well i bought a 95 audi a6 (automatic) back in december of 2006 for $3,600 total. Within the first month of driving it i discovered that it would often not shift out of 2nd gear, so this led to thehabit of having to stop the car, turn it off and wait a moment to drive it (which it drove decently until the next fit). Well after having some body work done on it from a light scrape with a guardrail, i got the car back and all the lights of the gear selector on the dash were lit and it ultimately could not shift out of first gear when in "D" gear. So I took it to my local audi/porsche/jaguar service center and the guy told me the there is a mechanical problem with my transmission and my multifunctional tcu switch (something of that nature) had errors on it too. The thing is that i did take the car for its first check up upon realising the 2nd gear fits and they told me that it was just a slight cpu error in the tcu and just needed restarting here and there... Well to replace the whole transmission, basically its gonna cost me $4,400.

The car has 126,000 miles on it, 14,000 of which is from me. I am just wondering how long do these cars normally last before more tranmision fits occurs so that i can confidently justify that my 4grands worth of repairs will last in the long run. Thanks.

Get your fluid changed first, it could be a sticky valve. I'm sure they are right and the tcm is messing up. I would buy a used one from a junk yard and throw that in. My volvo 850 had a sticking valve and it would slip between 3rd to 4th for the first shift of the day. It continued to do that for 2 more years and 60k miles with no sign of failure. I could have had the trans replaced, but I see now that would have been a waste. I ended up trading in the car for my A6. What I am saying is just because you have a mechanical failure doesn't mean the trans can't last a very long time.

Ilooked through the manual for the transmission fluid cap, but it seems that it doesnt exist[&:]. Im used to working with japanese imports so I'm guessing that theres something very different in the audi, do you have a link on how to change its fluid?

I'm not sure how you change the fluid in your a6 as it has a different transmission than mine. There are two people on here that come to mind that I think could help you. Auditech79 and Techbot, PM them and see if they can hook you up.
