'99 A6 Avant Shopping
 

I've been looking at a few seemingly well kept examples of '99 A6 avants with the 2.8 and auto trans. Is there any reason to stay away from these? Anything I should watch for while checking them out?

The best advice I could give you is: "Be prepared to spend $$". No matter what the condition or miles/kilometers, keep in mind that you are looking at 12yr old cars that will be most likely in need of something. If you're not a wrench turner, you might want to find a local Audi specialist to look over a car before you buy it. I think you'll find the minimal investment of a "pre-purchase inspection" can help eliminate surprises down the road.

Definitely all of that is good advice. I was hoping for a few more specifics though. Are the engine and trans generally reliable? Any common problems to look for? Is this gen better or worse than other?

IMO, service records are worth their weight in gold. A well maintained(ie: sludge-free) 2.8 30v can easily reach 200k miles...the automatic transmissions, on the other hand.:rolleyes: Timing belt replacements are not optional...Audi recommends every 110k mi., 75k mi. is probably a safer number. Catalytic converters/O2 sensors on these cars are susceptible to deterioration, mostly due to N. American fuel quality issues. Minimum recommended octane is 91, but my Avant runs much better on top tier 93(...my wallet is not amused). Other stuff to look for??...leaking VCGs, brakes(including condition/history of ABS module), fr. control arms(all 8 of them), trans. tail housing & rear diff. seals, CV boots, ect.

I'm sure I missed some stuff...maybe somebody else could chime in?
