A6 4.2 missfire after 3500 rpm
Hi again it seems that the road that i took in order to diagnose the missfire was longer for me .today i cecked compression and i got 180 psi per cylinder so i have compression and that led me to look under the tb cover and for my surprise i discovered the tb verry loose (you could twist it verry easy with your fingers ) so i ordered a tb kit and tools ,i'll keep writing if that is not the problem but i think that other than that i'll ceck the fuel pressure regulator .Thankx again Hxgaser for the input and if you know any tricks for the tb job i will be happy to listen.
Hello i just wanted to update the thread with the latest news .I just finished the timing belt job i replaced all the components and used the proper tools ,i had the timing off pretty much ,now all is good from that point of view .But i still have the missfires so i am posting again I get p0300 p0505 p0308 and p0307 i posted in the order thet vag com finds it .Bentley manual says to ceck the ignition coil and spark plugs ,i got new everything ,swapped the injectors and no luck ,fuel pressure regulator seems ok ,no leaks ,the vacuum hoses ok the throttle body cleaned ,the intake is leak free .I am wondering what to ceck next ,is it possible to have a rpm limit set by ecu or the ecu map messed up somehow ? Any help will be appreciated .Thank you.
I was thinking TB problem before you said you found it loose and fixed it. I am suprised that the problem still exists.
I don't know a lot about the 4.2 but we can assume that something happens at around
3,000-3500 rpm that starts the problem.
As you have done -- the first thing I would look at is the vacuum hoses -
Is there something that opens at around 3K RPM - I am wondering if the transmission does a lock-up at 3K and a valve opens that allows a large vacuum leak.
Does it misfire at 3K when in a lower gear or only high gear?
Did you do the fuel filter?
Just quessing!!

The fuel filter has 6000 miles air filter like so i have a k&n also a normal one it does it with either one ,the transmission is not related i think , if i accelerate in park it does missfire after 3000 ,it missfires also on road but only after i keep it above 3000 rpm a couple of seconds. i will keep looking for the fault but i do not want to replace parts that are still good .Maybe i'll ceck the vacuum solenoids too but i think if they do not work they trow diffrent codes .Ussually i heard that vacuum leaks are irrelevant at higher rpm .i wonder if the fuel pressure regulator is bad but why the same 3 cyl ?if fuel pump was bad why 3 cyl are missfiring ?And i could go on like this
) .Anyway thanks for the help and if you have anny suggestions i am happy to hear it and learn from it .Thank you .

K&N filter -- The one with the oil?
I remember reading that the oil can contaminate the MAF and mess things up, but have no personal experience because I'm too cheep to spend money on slight HP increases.

I used the k&n but i took it off it does not do much other than cloggs your MAF i installed 5months ago a regular paper one i guess is fram meanwhile i ceaned the MAF but if i unpugg it car runs worse so i figure thet should be still good at idle it measures about 7g/s .i cecked today the solenoid valves (egr's ) i have about 3 ,one conects to the combi valves and two at the vacuum actuators ,all seem to be between 25-30 ohm ,i also cecked the vacuum reservoir ,i do not know what to ceck anymore !but the dealer will not see me yet for the diagnose ,i refuse not to find it out without going there ,last time they send me home with the ceck engine on because it was too expensive for them to replace some 02 sensors while in warranty so i take the road of maintaining my car by myself so i did for the last 6 years .thanx for the response i appreciate it .
What happens at 3000-3500rpm is the 1st stage of the variable intake kicks in. The second kicks in at around 5500rpm. I know it adjusts the length of the intake runners but I think it also changes the timing. I'm having the same issue now p0305, p0307 as well as p0308 right after a water pump/timing belt job.
