i want to buy a used a6 1999 to 2003 wich one is the best one and wich motor i do over 30k a year help me make a good choice:):):):eek:

If you want performance and reliability/durability pick the 4.2

If you want performance and the ability to mod, and are willingto have reliability/durability issues, pick the 2.7t.

If you don't care about performance then the 2.8 and 3.0 are both for you.

I love my 2000 A Avant 2.8 but at 83K I hate how many things have gone wrong with the car. If you are looking for a highly reliable car you can drive with little maintenance RUN away from the Audi brand. On the flip side if you want a car that you will LOVE to drive and are financially able to deal with the repairs then the Audi brand is for you. I have driven mostly Japanese brands for the last 20 years and they all drive nice and are very reliable but they don't come close to the experience of driving an Audi.

So thats my 2 cent, If you are looking at a higher mileage car make sure to check in to the maintenance that has been done. That can eat you alive.

With used Audis the maintenance history within an engine type is more important than the year. With that said, obvioulsy the newer the carthe further along the development cycle it will be and hopefully the bugs have been worked out. In addition, the newer the car the less possibility for prior abuse.

Good reliablity, good stockperformance, good looks, A6 4.2

The 4.2 is a little different to look at too. It comes with the "widbody" the fenders are wider than the other A6's and the 4.2 has larger doorbladesat the bottom of the doors.

if u go 02 and over audi made some minor changes in body accents and other features ... u should search the forum this post is on here at least more then 3 times!

Audis not reliable?????

Just look at the R-10 TDI. It is one of the most relaible race cars ever built.....

OH NO! I JUST REALIZED THAT IT TAKES A TEAM OF MECHANICS TO KEEP IT GOING!

Everyday Audis are very reliable. You can rely onthem to do exactly as predicted!! (Timing belt at 70K electrical problems on que.)

I guess you could experience R-10 reliability if you had a team of mechanics working on your A6.

There are so many options and bells and whistles on an A6, it doesn't surprise me that things go wrong. I never had a car before that told me when my brake pads were getting worn or a rear bulb was out. Neither did I ever have both ESC and ABS on a vehicle. So, there are more opportunities for problems.

Having said that, from 37k to 114k I have had the alternator fail at 74k and replaced the clutch/flywheel at 94k (which I attribute to the prior owner towing a trailer and then me getting the car chipped at 79k). I averaged 26k/year over the three years I have been driving it, mostly during the winter.

Preventive maintenance has been reasonable, with the mandatory timing belt costing me about $1000 at 95k. Otherwise I change oil/filter every 8-10k using Mobil1, installed a K&N air filter which I clean every 20k, and avoid pot holes and slow down for railroad tracks whenever I can - and my suspension is fine. If you live where there is snow, this is the best car I have ever owned for winter driving. And thatcovers 30 years in upstate NY, OH, and now MI including driving a Jeep CJ7 as well as numerous FWD and AWD vehicles.

Buy a later model A6 - the 2000-2002s had smaller oil feeds to the turbos, get the service records if possible, and have the car thoroughly checked out by a reputable mechanic who knows Audis.
