Advice on buying used A6
Looking to buy my first Audi and I'm looking at 2001/2002 models. I've read some stuff on the 2.7T and 3.0L models, but haven't seen much on the 4.2L. How do the 4.2L models compare to the other two in terms of reliability? A couple of cars I'm looking at are a 2002 A6 3.0L with 30,000 miles for $24,000 and a 2001 A6 4.2L with 51,000 miles for $21,000. Are there any major issues with the 4.2L? Like I said I haven't found out too much about them, any info would be great. Thanks

I have a 2001 4.2 and I love it. I think it has great power for a stock engine and I have had no problems with it what so ever. I have both the sport and luxury packages which really sets it apart from the other models. How are you finding it so cheap? I bought mine from an Audi dealer a little less than a year ago and it cost me 32,000.

Thanks for the reply. I was just looking online at some dealers around me, the prices range from $21-27,000 depending on mileage and packages. So I guess the sport and luxury packages are worth the extra money? Do you know what's included in them? I only think one of the cars around here have both, there aren't that many.

To tell you the truth, I have no idea what they include except I think my car has a much more aggresive look to it. I think it looks lower and it has the side skirts on it. I know that when you put one with both the options next to one with neither, I like mine a little bit better. I just happened to stumble upon mine when I was looking at A4's at an Audi dealership and fell in love with it instantly. Test driving it threw me over the edge. I love it. The only down side was that I could have got a much newer A4 for the same price. Doesn't matter to me though because I love it!

yeah i'll have to second cary on this one. all the c5s are simply marvelous cars but as a 4.2 owner i'll have to say that i especially appreciate the stock 300hp (this way i really have no need to mod the engine). i like the fact that that power is not supported by turbos, even though i luv the turbo technology i never have to worry about replaceing any. and finally the way that the body of the 4.2 is cut is much closer to the rs6 than any of the other c5s, due to the wider wheel wells and the door blades.

I like the 2.7T, and it offers the best performance of the lineup, as in 0-60 as I recall. Rechip the 2.7 and push it to 315hp, thats kewl.
But, for seer look, the 4.2 is awesome. Those flared wheel wells make it look beefy and more aggressive. As well, while the 2.7 turbos have no issues, they are more complicated and hence costly if you do have troubles.
