It won't be in your VIN.

My 97 A6 2.8 Avant is an AFC but I don't know about your 98.

I suspect it is an AHA - because the motors changed around 97-98. If I have it right the sedans changed in 97 and the Avants in 98. I'll check you vin against my Bentley when I get home tonight and see what it says..

 

98 is AHA or ACK

 

pretty sure it will say on either a valve cover or there is a protruding section of a head.
and NH USA, I think your right, sedan switched bodys in 97, wagon in 98.

 

I just confirmed that you have an AHA motor.

I can't figure out how to insert a screen shot of the page but that is what Bentley says you have.

it's an AHA. AHA is 30V. The other is 12V
