Audi A6 4.2L Quattro Reliability

Hello,

I am thinking about buying a2001 Audi A6 4.2L Quattro for aprox $25,000 CND. The car looks awesome and I am going for a test drive in 2 days, but I have been doing some research and have been seeing some conflicting reviews on the A6. Alot of people seem to have had ongoingtroubles with the A6, but alot of people seem to love them. Could anyone owning an A6, speficily a 4.2L Quattro post on this issue? Have you guys had any majors issues with the A6? What is your personal opinion? I dont mind replacing/fixing things on ocassion but mulitple problems with the same issue doesnt seem like fun to me. I will be asking the dealer for service history but I would like your guy's input too. Thanks in advance.

I have an 05 4.2. The engine is a beast and very durable. The issues are suspension parts, because of the weight of the car, and electrical type items because of the amount of technology packed into the cars. If you consider struts and ball joints to be a maintenance type item at 90-100,000 miles, the only break-down issues are electrical gremlins.

Kevin: Good stuff,if you don't mind; minus struts/ball joints, how much have you spent on repairs ? How many miles does it have on it ?
The A6 I am looking at has 50,000km and it looks pretty mint

My car has 30,000 miles and is still under warranty, so I have not spent anything on maintenance. My observations are based onpostingson this and other forums, as well as consumer reports.

i've got a 2000 4.2. it's got 92k miles and i haven't had any problems with the motor but i've only had the car for a month and have to replace the front differential. since the front dif is in the tranny, the whole tranny needs to be replaced, so i'm looking at spending somewhere in the vacinity of $3000-$4000 to replace it, so i'm pretty bummed about that.

I've owned a 2000 4.2L with 67k miles for about two months now. The car stopped going in reverse a month after and it's a $2500 bill. Also the moon roof will not open due to it being off track. I'm not ready to say they're a problem yet. I absolutely LOVE the car. It's been a blast to drive. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed its a coincidence.

I always say..BUY an Audi with 2 FULL Years of CPO and atleast a few months of Orig warranty left.
It will last a lifetime.

I have a 2000 A6 4.2 DO you have the money for maintainence. Like everyone else I absolutely love the car, but (there's always a but) I just spent $2600 reolaceing my thermostat, timing belt, water pump, tie rods, etc. Now I just got my registration renewal form and my ABS light is on. The computer part is screwed. Thats about a $1000 and I can't get my car smogged with that ABS computer failing. It won't allow the smog to be read. Yeah ME!! Just be careful this stuff seems to be the norm.
