Default Audi A6 - BOSE Radio goes to MAX volume by itself.

Guys,

My Audi A6 - 2002, has a Bose sound system, and just recnetly, the radio has started to increase in volume on its own to MAX -- Super loud, unless I turn it off. even if i try to turn it down it automatically tries to go back up. Not a problem everyday but when it happens, i have to turn off the radio and wait a few momments before trying to turn it on again. Any advice on this? How much it might cost to fix?

Thanks

Sounds like it might be able to be fixed just by cleaning the contacts inside the ****. So you'll have to take out the radio and then take some of it apart, if you're not comfortable with this then either get a new radio or find someone to do it for you.

Audi Bose radio's do not have reostat volume control - I think they call it phase lock loop. Your problem is somewhat common and requires that the circuit be repaired. There used to be a guy in Florida and another in Mass that would fix the radio for around $100

Why did you specify "Bose" in there? The Bose vs. regular stereos (through 2004) are the exact same drop in unit minus a VAG-COM encoding (and different speakers, and a different amplifier/sub-box in the back of course - but that's not the point here).

I said BOSE because he has BOSE and I am familure with BOSE because all my A6's have or had BOSE. At least two of the BOSE radios had the infamous "'full volume on it's own problem" and the only fix was a new BOSE radio or repair.

Since a replacement BOSE radio is around $100 (used) and sometimes you have to spend another $75 - $100 to get the code from a dealer the repair road is usually less expensive. But - I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

I hear that they are using dawn to clean the oil soaked Gulf animals but I hope he dosen't do that to a BOSE Audi radio. On the other hand - if he uses soap and water to clean the contacts the question of replace or repair will be quickly answered.

I'm just saying that when you go to actually buy a new/used radio there is not a separate unit for Bose and that it is going to be the same price regardless of whether or not the rest of your system is Bose. When you say things like you do, it's going to confuse people into thinking that there are two different head units. That's all I'm trying to prevent - confusion of people searching through things. And yes, if you get a new radio and don't have the SAFE code you'll have to get it from Audi themselves. And if you don't have the right configuration on the radio (bose vs non-bose), I do know some dealerships that would do it for free - not to mention I would hope that you know someone with VAG-COM.

Again, there is NO difference between a Bose and non-Bose headunit in an Audi vehicle (i can only confirm this up to 2004).

I was not aware that the Symphany radio was interchangable with BOSE.

I thought the Bose had the amps in the speakers and the Symphany had them in the head.

Both the Bose and non-Bose speaker systems work in the exact same way. For either you have the headunit which has an amp for the front speakers and then an output for the rear amplifier which then powers the rear speakers and subwoofer enclosure. The only difference between a Bose and non-Bose system (again, before 2004) is that you have different speakers, a different amplifier in the back (it has more power), and a different subwoofer enclosure that was designed by Bose (one of my college friends/alumni helped w/ it actually).

So all in all, all of the speakers and amplifiers are located in the same location for both Bose and non-Bose, they're just upgraded (while the headunit remains unchanged except for a VAG-COM programming).
