Default 99 avant trans issues

Bought a 99 avant 2.8 auto about 2 months aho with 2xxxxx miles on body 16xxx on motor. I went to pull from a stop sign did the normal high rev shift then it slammed and went into limp mode. I get home and rest it by holding the gas pedal down turning key to aux power then back off. It worked until I drove it again. Now it slams into reverse and drive and its still in limp mode. I dont have a vagcom. What is wrong with it engine wise is MAF. As for tranny I cant pull up the codes and dont really have the scratch to bring it to a dealer. And guesses or idea where I should start

Sad to say, but that slamming, lurching, and high reving have nothing do your engine. You tranny is pretty much on the dead door step.

If you want to take the first steps to trying to get the tranny operational, try a flush by yourself, change the filter. That will be the cheapest option, but I have a feeling a clutch pack or a valve is the issue and that translates into a full tranny rebuild or replacement.

If you see that the colour of the tranny fluid is black = bad. You can pretty much count the fact that the tranny is done for.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news., but there is a small chance the flush might make it happy enough to last another 6-12 months.

I figured that would be my such luck. Ive already found used trannys for $300. Id like to do a 5 spd swap. But theres nothing much you can do with 2.8

Ok so pulled up tranny codes and there is none. Only code that comes up is the MAF. I know theres a tcm but I know the MAF can do some fun stuff to everything. Any ideas

Hey, I got a similar issue. I made a post about being in limp mode and posted up my codes.

I too am getting a MAF code but no real tranny codes. I'm hoping it's not a bad tranny.

While I was trying things out, I would put the car in D and R to see if I could get it to go forward/back, and when I did it had the "thunk". I changed the tranny fluid (which was pretty clear - it was pink/red) and the filter, now when I put it in gear it's much smoother...but still not moving.

I'll let you know if I figure anything else out.

Hey, I had a similar issue with my 2000 Avant. I just sourced a tranny, but it's from an S4 (2.7t). Will it fit and work properly?
