Bose HeadUnit Removal Question
I have an Audi '00 A6 w/ a Blows... i mean Bose symphony installed. I will be replacing it w/ a Audi Navi DVD system. I'm sure someone has asked this before but... where can I get my hands on the radio removal tool? The Navi DVD can be added onto so, I will be in and out as I add on later on down the line. But for now I need the tool so I can get it out. Also, I read that I will need a "VAG-COM" to change settings to the radio and instrument cluster. New to the Audi game.... is this something I should buy or can I go to a shop or dealer and have them adjust this?
Get a set of these radio removeal keys from Samstagsales.com. They are much better than the OEM version (no sharp edges). Look for T10057 on this page: http://www.samstagsales.com/vwaudi.htm#radio

They work in the bose headunit as well as the NAV unit:

Once the keys are inserted, use your fingers and pull from the cassette slot. You get better leverage from there. DO NOT PULL FROM THE RADIO KEY LOOPS!!! To remove the keys, the headunit must be out of the dash. You depress the spring clips with your finger as shown below, and pull the key out. Any attempt to force the keys out wil damage the retainer clips, making any future removals even more difficult than before!

As far as the VAG COM, if you are serious about your car, you really should have one of these handy for many reasons. For one thing, doing the NAV install, the dealer wil likely charge you at least an hour of labor, if they are willing at all to recode the things that need to be done for the Nav unit. The other useful purpose is when you need to check you car. If you get a warning light, it always helps to know what might be wrong, or at least what is causing the warning light to come on. Then you can go to the dealer or an independent shop and let them know what you think is throwing the code. No more suprises.
Go to www.rosstech.com and get the real deal, not those eBay versions. You get a fully functional VAG COM, software, but moreover, awesome techincal support when you ned to troubleshoot.

Devastata A6 just for curiosity, How much did you pay for the AUDI NAV system? I just moved to this country
and I hate getting lost when I go to NYC or I am in Boston. I really need that NAV system!! I will appreciate the info! thanx!

Thanks for the input Boston Driver!! Most Helpful in understanding things.
Unfortunely, (although I love my A6 and treat it well) I don't have enough for the VAG-COM and the Navi.... but i've found a temporary solution. A link that list individuals that have the VAG tool and will (I hope) share (some charge a fee, some dont). Maybe that'll get me through until I get my own.
Victo_Peru: I haven't purchased one yet. I've seen one that is just Navigation/CD/AM/FM its was about $500. But for the one I really want (plays CDs,MP3 CDs/DVDs) I expect to pay $800-$1000 for one. I know.... you can get a way better one buying aftermarket (Pioneer, Clarion, etc) but I would rather have one that fits my entire console and is made for my vehicle so I can keep theft to a minimum. If I go with aftermarket I risk someone cracking the din adaptor and just pulling the whole unit out. I live in a nice area, but work in a bad one, so I must plan carefully.
As for getting lost in NY, the streets go by numbers. Try living out here in FL, where all the streets have names like Orange Ave and Orange Blossom Trail. Seriously, if you want to pay that much for a stock Navi search EBAY, thats where I plan to get mine (dont outbid me j/k). Audi DVD Navigation Plus. When I get mine and install it, (1-3 weeks) I will continue this thread and let you know how it works out.
