Default Cam Postion Sensor

I have a 2001 Allroad (6 speed), 95,000 mi, 2.7 bituro. Last October I got a CEL warning which my mechanic said was for two items: one of the oxygen sensors needed to be replaced, and cam seals needed to be replaced. He said that neither was an emergency, and that I could drive the car indefinately before making the repairs.

Three weeks ago, catastrophic engine failure (heads, valves, turbo failure). He said that my cam position sensor had gone bad, causing the meltdown, and that it was not related to the other problems..He also said ther is no waring/diagnostic for a bad CPS.

Does this scenario sound right?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It can happen as noted. Without the actual code, it is hard to be exact. Could have been you timing belt too.
