Hi,

My question is the same as the title of the thread. Just wondering if you can use the can obd2 diagnostic tool that you find in wallmart for $90 on a 2000 a6 4.2?

I have my check engine light on and I want to be able to find and clear the codes myself ( since i started getting into doing alot of stuff myself on this car ).

Is this a way to go or do I need the ross tech software , cables and laptop instead?

You need non can obd cable, laptop and software.

you can use any of OBD2 scaners. Only different btw VAG COM, they show just Pxxxx code. U don't have to buy one, just go Autozone and they scan your car free of charge.
