Car doesn't start diagnosis

I started my car and drove it around the block then all of a sudden it stopped. Then it didn't start. It seems like the battery is ok because the lights are still on and radio is running. What could be the possible reasons? Kindly advise.
(Audi a6 quattro wagon 98)
Many thanks.

Stopped Audi

Hi NEPAudi,

Your question is a bit tough to answer without physically inspecting the car, but I would start with the most simple things first to troubleshoot the cause. First...and this is not meant to insult you, but does the car have gas in it? If so I would next check for simple things under the hood (any obvious fluid leaking, loose connections on wires and sensors, any broken drive belts). If all of this checks out, the problem may be more severe, a broken timing belt or some bad electrical part (alternator possibly).
If you're not able to diagnosis the issue after checking these things I would next check for some reputable and qualified shop or technician to take a look at the car. Good Luck with it!:)

Please do a search on not starting. Your problem is not unique and is being discussed in numerous threads. The fundamental answers remain the same.

1. if it has gas etc - make sure the timing belt isn't broken
2. then it come down to getting gas and electricty to the cylinders at the correct time so VAGCom is needed to get the codes-

Yep.. need alittle more info.

Coolant temp Sensor for the ECU is also suspect, especially if it restarts after an hour or two.

... or spark plug wires... Again, codes are good... we need the codes!

Without any additional information -- I'd say the damn thing is broken!

I dont know... could just be kaput.

NH_USA 05-06-2009 12:11 PM

Ah I forgot -- it's German --- kaput is the correct word! sorry
